Groundnuts, or also better known as peanuts, play an important role in the growth and health of the body. Peanuts, or commonly known as legumes, are packed with several health benefits, with monounsaturated fats and other nutrients that are healthy for the functioning of the heart. Peanuts are also a rich source of antioxidants.
Peanut cultivation began in South America dating back to 7500 years ago. In the early years, the plant reached Mexico where it further spread to North America, China, and Africa.
China accounts for 8% of the world peanut exports and India is the second largest nut producer in the world. The nuts are produced in different varieties including Spanish, bold, and are a primary sources of oilseed crop in the country.
Nigeria is the largest groundnut producer in Africa with a production of approx.. 2.7m tons, accounting for 30% of the total Africa’s nut production. Sudan in 2016-17 produced approx. 1.1m tons re-enforcing their positon on the world map again as a major African supplier and exporter.
